Maulid
The word “Maulid”
in Arabic means “the place of birth or the time of birth” and it is used
largely for “birth” also. Here, the word ‘Maulid’ refers to the biographical
histories for the prophet (ﷺ), other prophets
(alaihimussalam) and pious servants of Allah. Normally ‘Maulid’ is compiled in
combination of the phrase and the poem.
To remember the
prophets (A) and the pious predecessors or to read and tell their stories is
very recommended ’Ibadha (act of worship) in Islam.
It is unnecessary
to stress the well-established importance of the need for remembering the
Prophet (ﷺ) and explaining his stories.
Sending Swalat on
the prophet (ﷺ) - praying Allah to
send blessings upon him - is the core for Maulidunnabi (Swallallahu ‘Alaihi wa
sallam)
There are many
Maulids written on Rasulullah (ﷺ).
In worldwide, Maulid
Dibae and Maulid Barzanji are
the most popular Maulids on Rasulullah (ﷺ).
Sharrafal Anam Maulid is also well-known. In Kerala, Manqus Maulid is mostly
recited while Subhana Maulid is recited in some other states like Tamilnadu. In
northern India and neighbouring countries of India, Urdu Lyrics (Na’at Shareef)
are more popular.
Manqus  Maulid
It is composed by
the Islamic Scholar from Malabar First Makhdoom - Sheikh
Zainudden bin Ali bin Ahmad (A.D. 1467 to A.D. 1522 / Hijrah 871-Sha'ban 12 to
Hijrah 928-Sha'ban 16) (Rahimahullahu).
(‘Makhdooms’
were the scholars from Ponnani (an area in Malabar, which was known as the
‘Makkah of Malabar’. They had the religious leadership of the Muslims in
Malabar and surrounding areas of Kerala).
Hidayatul Adhkiya is another famous work for the author. It is a well-known
book in Taswawwuf.
The Context
There were
frequent fears of Plague, Smallpox and many natural calamities at the
coastal areas of Malabar. So, the people approached Sheikh Maqdoom who was the
top spiritual leader of Muslims in Malabar and expressed their grievances and
worries.
Shaikh
Makhdoom thought deeply about the matter and decided to compose a
Moulid, following in the footsteps of former Muslim scholars. Some parts of
this Maulid were extracted from other maulids (and shortened), while some
themes were added by himself to cater to the problems of the Malabar region at
that time.  Sheikh Maqdoom then asked everyone to read this Maulid at
their houses and in all the Masjids.
This Maulid is
known on the title of ‘Al-Maulidul Manqoos’ (The word “Manqus”
in Arabic means ‘The Shortened’).
Since that time,
this Maulid has been regularly recited by Muslims in Kerala and neighbouring
places with great devotion, especially in the month of Rabee’ul Awwal, and also
during special events and for special needs.
In different parts
of the world, by Kerala Muslim communities as well as by many other groups also
it has been recited with great enthusiasm.
May Allah
Subhanahu Watha-ala grant Sheikh Maqdoom (R) His divine blessings and May Allah
shower His blessings upon us, parents, teachers, families and all fellow
brothers and sisters.

عليك

(At the time of horror on the day of judgement) when Allah the most generous will be characterized with the name of ‘revenger’ |
And O, the Messenger of Allah, my case will not be a big thing in front of your big status. (because your status is powerful to make intercession for all the sinners among the believers) |

Nb:- In a hadith which is reported by Umar bin Al-Khattab (R) - on the subject of acceptance of the repentance from Adam (‘Alaihissalam) - when Adam (‘Alaihissalam) asked Allah forgiveness for him by the status of the prophet (ﷺ), Allah (SWT) pardoned him and said to him: If It were not for Muhammad (ﷺ), I would not have created you (Hakim & Baihaqi) |

And He brought out him in
the last era (as the last of all prophets) as He decided earlier and declared
it in the Holy Scripts and then He (Allah) put on him with garments of beauty
which were not put on anybody before him. Thus, He was born with a face which
ashamed the moon and the Farqadh (The Star, situated in the
northern part of the sky, often used by sailors during their navigation) |

Ala huwalladzee tawassala bihi Aadamu ‘alahissalam waftakhara bi kaunihi walidan wastagatha bihi Nuhun ‘alaihissalam

|
Yes, He (Muhammad) (ﷺ) is the one by whose status Adam
(‘Alaihissalam) asked Allah, and Adam (‘Alaihissalam) was proud to be his
father. And he is the one by whose baraka Nuh
(‘Alaihissalam) sought help from Allah (During the flood) and thus he
  escaped from the destruction. |
|

Wa kana fi swulbi Ibrahima ‘alaihissalam heena ulqiya finnari fa ‘aada

|
He (Muhammad ﷺ) had been in the backbone of Hazrat
Ibrahim ‘Alaihissalam while he was put into the fire and he was
back from the fire (safely) as the flames of the fire were put off wondrously |
|

|
And when his mother Aminah
(Radhiyallahu ‘anha) got  pregnant with the prophet (ﷺ), the angels of the Heaven came to help
her, and the prophets (‘Alaihimussalam)  came to her saying ‘when you
give birth to the (baby) ‘sun of victory and guidance’, please name him
  Muhammad (ﷺ).’ |

Allah says: “There has certainly
come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you
suffer; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful.” |
|
Waruwiya ‘ani nnabiyyi swallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam annahu qala kuntu

|
And it is reported from the
Prophet (ﷺ) (By Ibnu ‘Abbas (R) as recorded By Ibnu
Asakir (R) and similar reports are narrated by Imam Twabrani and others) that
  the prophet (ﷺ) said, “I was a
light in front of Allah (سبحانه وتعالى )  two
thousand years before Adam ‘alaihissalam was created. This light had been
  glorifying Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) and
angels also were glorifying Allah along with this Tasbeeh (glorifying) from
  this Nur” |
|
Falamma khalaqallahu ta`ala Adama ‘alaihissalam alqa dhalika nnura fi
twinatihi fa ahbatwaniyallahu fi swulbi Adama ‘Alaihissalam ilal ardhi |
|
When Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) created Adam ‘alaihissalam put
that Nur in his clay then Allah sent down me to the earth
through the backbone of Adam ‘alaihissalam. |
|
Waja`lani fissafeenati fi swulbi Nuhin ‘alaihissalam waja`lani fi
swulbil khalili Ibrahima ‘alaihissalm heena qudzifa bihi finnar. |
|
And He placed me on the
backbone of Nuh (‘alaihissalam) in the ship and put me in the backbone of
Khaleelullahi Ibrahim (‘alaihissalam) when he was thrown to the fire. |
|
Walam yazal yanquluni rabbi minal aswlabil karimatil fakhirati ilal
arhami zzakiyyati twahirati hatta akhrajaniyallahu min baini abawayya walam

|
And thus, My Lord had been
taking me through noble and delighted backbones - one by one -to the purified
  wombs. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) brought
out me from my parents very clean and pure in a sacred lineage
[Note: All these
events are seen reported in MUJMAUL KABEER for Imam Twabrani (4:213) and in

And one caller from Allah,
announced in the heavens and earth “Yes, indeed the Nur (the
light) in which the leader of mankind (ﷺ)
is shielded has been placed in the belly/womb of Amina (Radhiyallahu ‘Anha).” |
|

When this Nur of

And Kursiyy (special

When she became pregnant
  with Prophet (ﷺ), in the
delightful month of Rajab, she was given the glad in the month of Sha’ban
that her wishes were going to be fulfilled and she was told in the Ramadan,
that she had got pregnant with a child who was completely purified from dirt
  and impurities |

|
She saw Hazrat Ibrahim alaihissalam
in the month of Dhulqadah, saying to her, “be pleased to be blessed with
the man (ﷺ) of lights, dignity and high status” |
|

Wa ataha fi dzil hijjati Musal kalimu ‘alaihissalam wa a`lamaha bi

|
Hazrat Musa ‘alaihissalam
came to her in Dhulhijjah and informed her about the status of the
Prophet (ﷺ) and his high rank |
|
Wa nadaha fi muharramin Jibrilu ‘alaihissalam bi anna waqta wiladatiha qaddana, wastwaffatil malaikatu manzilaha

|
Jibril ‘alaihissalam called
her in Muharram telling her that the time for her delivery was very near. Angels lined
up in her house in the month of Safar. |
|

Fa ’alimat anna mau’ida ssururi qad qaruba wa

|
Then she knew that the
time of happiness has come very near. When the month of Rabiulawwal
began; the earth and sky were shining in brightness, and the Holy Ka’aba and
  Swafa Mountain were illuminating |
|
Thumma lamma ja-a waqtul wiladati wa kharaja manshuru ssa`ada wa
jaddha bi aminata (R) amrul wilada |
|
And when the time of
delivery came, the proclamation of success was out, the signs of delivery
were getting strong in Amina (Radhiyallahu ‘Anha) |
|

And the “sun of victory” was

the flags of appreciation were spread all over the universe |

Suddently a white bird flew
down and passed over the belly of Amina (Radhiyallahu ‘Anha) speedily
stretching its wings. Then (as stated in Nurul Abswar-by Imam Suyuti
Rahimahillahu) she began to feel labour pains on the eve of 12th Rabiul
awwal and in the morning (of 12th Rabiul awwal),
she gave birth to the prophet of mankind and the jinn. May Allah send his
blessings upon him, and all of his family and companions. |

While I was very surprised
by this, a group of three came to me, their faces were looking like the moon.
There was a silver jug in one’s hand, and a washbowl of
green aquamarine with another one, and there was folded white
silk in the third one’s hand.  he spread it. Then There was a seal
(referring to the end of the chain of prophets and messengers (Alaihimussalam) with
prophet Muhammad (swallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) astonishing the sights of viewers,
  by its brightness.
Note: It was predicted in Tourat and Injiel, that the
Prophet (ﷺ) would be born with this seal. So, many
of the scholars of these two books, embraced Islam, seeing this seal and
other signs mentioned in their books. |

On the seventh day of his

did all matters on its importance and he invited the Quraish and gave them
  nice hosting with delicious food.
After having their meal,
they asked Abdul Muttalib: What name you have given for your son (grandson).
He replied, “I have named him ‘Muhammad’. They told him, “you have
disapproved the names of your forefathers?” He said, “I wanted that all on

When it was the time for the
appearance of his secrets and lightening of the universe with his lights,
Amina (Radhiyallahu ‘Anha) was alone paying attentions to his blessings and
nobody was there. She didn`t feel anything except that there was a light shining
in her house, she was fully caught by the pleasure and happiness, and
Angels and Hur E`en (unique beautiful girls from heaven with large
eyes) came there, different types of birds surrounded her room, she
heard their rushing and celebration on the coming of the prophet (ﷺ). How could this not be the case as the
leader of the entire world (ﷺ) had been born in the
house of Amina (Radhiyallahu Anha). | ||

“There was a Dzimmy (a
non-Muslim who stays with full protection in an Islamic republic) staying
beside me. I used to invite poor people in the month of Rabeeul awwal and
celebrate the birthday of the Prophet swallallahu alaihi wasallam. He
asked me, ‘why do you do this in this month and and not in others?’. I said,
“Because of my happiness on the birth of the Messenger (ﷺ), as he was born in this month.” Then he (the Dzimmy) began
to laugh at me and I was very hurt. |

He (‘Aliyyubnu Zaid) said: I
opened the door for him. He entered uttering La ilahaha Illallahu
Muhammadu Rasulullah (ﷺ) (there is no God

I asked, “What happened to you?” He replied “I saw last night a man with a
handsome face, who smelt very nice, bearing a reverential countenance, with
long slim eyebrows, and with good shaped cheeks. When he spoke, his face
shone and when he was silent, he looked very magnificent. He speaks in very
sweet manner. When he appears you would say, “This is the shining full moon.”
When he walks, the smell of musk and ambergris: a fragrance) emanated
from him. Oh, what a beautiful face it was! What a nice smell it was! Then I
wanted to kiss his hands. He (ﷺ) asked me, “you
kiss my hands while you are not in my religion?” |

I asked, “Who are you,
with whom (in this meeting) Allah has blessed me? Then he (the Prophet (ﷺ) said “I am the one who has been sent as
a mercy to all worlds, I am the leader of those who came first and those who
will come last, I am Muhammad (ﷺ),
last of all prophets and the messenger of the lord of the worlds.” Then
I uttered, “Lailahaha illallahu Muhammadurrasulullah”. Then he opened his
arms and hugged me, saying that “This heaven and that palace are
for you.” I asked him (ﷺ) what is the sign
for it. He said “It is that You would die tomorrow.”

He asked both of them. What is the reason for your believing? They said, “We
also saw the Prophet (ﷺ) (in our dreams) as
you had before. If he had promised you one palace, he has promised us two palaces.”
Aliyyubnu Zaid (R) said “The man died immediately, the next day his daughter

[Note: This
event happened amidst the travel for the Battle of Khaiber at one

was taking rest in his lap, Ali (Radhiyallahu Anhu) could not perform the

The moon was split by his (ﷺ) order.

event is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an (54:1). This event is also

(The incident
is reported in Swahihul Bukhari. We summarize it here: “The
Prophet (ﷺ) used to stand on a stem for a palm tree
to give his sermon on Fridays. Then an Ansari woman or man said, ‘yaa
Rasulalallah (ﷺ)! Shall we make a
pulpit for you?’ He replied, ‘If you wish.’ So, they made a pulpit for him.
when it was Friday, the Prophet (ﷺ)
sat on the new pulpit to give his sermon. Suddenly, the stem of the tree
started to cry like a child on missing its chance (in extreme love for
  rasulullah (ﷺ). All those who
were present heard its loud weeping. Then Prophet (ﷺ)
came down and embraced it till it stops crying. |
And the wood came to you weeping |

wa tastural ‘uyooba wa tuhassinal akhlakha
to conceal our disabilities, and improve our
  characters
wa tuwassi’al arzaaqa, watashfiyal asqaama,
to increase our livelihood, and heal our ailments
wa tu’aafiyal aalaama, wa an tadfa’ ‘anna wa’an ahli
baladhina wa baitina haadza ssumma nnaqi’a
to remove our pains, and protect us and the
people of this country and house from this dreadful toxin
wa ddaa-al qami’a, wal waba al qati’a innaka
  mujeebun saami’
and deadly disease, and other contagious
  diseases. (e.g. plague)
(Note: the continuous natural calamities and
diseases plaguing the Malabar community was the main reason for writing this
  Moulid.)
Verily You are the Best to Respond (to Prayers)
  and All-Hearing
Wa-an taswrifa ‘anna twa’una wal bala-, w
ta’swimana min inzali qahrika wal waba-i
to eradicate from us the plague, small pox and to
keep us away from Your anger and all disasters,
Wa tahjubana bi noorika min sharri ‘aduwwina
  washarril mal’uon
and cover us with Your Nur from evil of our enemy
  and shaitan,
wamin sharril waba-i wa ttwa’uon,
to save us from the plague and small pox.
Allahumma la tuaakhidzna bi soo-i af’aalina wala tuhlikna
  bi khatwayaana
Oh Allah, please do not punish us due to our bad
deeds and do not destroy us due to our mistakes.
Allahumma inna nas-aluka an tu’idhana min ‘adhabil
  qabri
Oh Allah, we seek refuge in You from the torment
  of Qabr
wa tu’minana minal faza’il akbari watunjiyana ‘an
  daaril bawari
and safeguard us from the worst tensions of the
Day of Judgment, and save us from hellfire,
wa tuskinanal firdausa min daaril qarari
and allow us to stay in Firdaus in paradise
bi haqqi Muhammadin wa aalihil abrari, wa
  aswhabihil akhyar
by the status of Muhammad (ﷺ), by his excellent kin, and by his great companions,
bi rahmatika yaa arhamarrahimeena
by Your mercy, Oh Most Merciful.
Waswallallahu ‘ala khairi khalqihi sayyidhinaa
  Muhammadin wa aalihi wasahabihi ajma’ieen
May Allah bestow His blessings upon the best of
His creatures, our leader Muhammad (ﷺ),
and on his kin and all of his companions,
